On se gotovo 3 godine držao na distanci od ostatka benda. Dok je grupa radila na albumu Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Frusciante i Flea su često zajedno pušili marihuanu i vidno izbegavali Anthony-ja. On se prisećao momenata zavisnosti od heroina i kokaina, i veze sa devojkom Skye. Bila su to veoma teška vremena za njega: "<em>The loneliness that I was feeling triggered memories of my time with her and how I'd had this beautiful angel of a girl who was willing to give me all of her love, and instead of embracing that, I was downtown with fucking gangsters shooting speedballs under a bridge.</em>"<br />Osećaj usamljenosti naveo je Kiedis-a da pomisli da je njegov jedini saputnik grad Los Anđeles: "I<em> felt an unspoken bond between me and my city. I'd spent so much time wandering through the streets of L.A. and hiking through the Hollywood Hills that I sensed there was a nonhuman entity, maybe the spirit of the hills and the city, who had me in her sights and was looking after me</em>" - upravo u tome se govori u prvim stihovima pesme. <br />Za Anthony-ja, to mesto (Under the bridge) predstavlja najtamniji i najgori deo života, kada se morao predstavljati kao verenik sestre narko-dilera, sve zarad lakšeg nabavljanja droge. </p><p>Under the bridge je jedna od pesama koja nikoga ne ostavlja ravnodušnim, i uglavnom je jako omiljena bez obzira na uzrast.
