The Canes today reassigned defenseman Bryan Rodney to Albany (AHL). Rodney was recalled Dec. 15 from the River Rats and had three assists in three games, including wins over Dallas and Florida. He now has five assists in 10 NHL games with the Canes this season. Defensemen Tim Gleason and Niclas Wallin have been sidelined with concussion-type symptoms. Canes coach Paul Maurice said Gleason, who has missed the last three games, could return for Monday's game against the New York Rangers.

Defenseman Tim Gleason will return to the Canes lineup tonight against the Rangers but Niclas Wallin will miss at least one more game. Both Gleason and Wallin were at the morning skate at the RBC Center. The Canes reassigned defenseman Bryan Rodney to Albany (AHL) on Sunday. Gleason took a puck in the face during the Washington Capitals game Dec. 11, requiring 30 stitches. He returned to the game, scoring a shorthanded goal, and played the next night in Ottawa, but post-concussion type symptoms have kept him out of the last three games. "We want to be a little careful about putting both (Gleason and Wallin) both in the same night," Canes coach Paul Maurice said. "We don't want to dress seven defense. We feel we'll need all four lines." Wallin has not played since the Vancouver game on Dec. 5, missing the last seven games. He is still two games shy of playing his 500th game for the Canes.

The Canes did not have a power-play goal in each of their last two games, but that's been a rarity in December. Carolina was 7-for-21 on the power play this month, the best in the league, until going 0-for-2 each game in the back-to-back Friday and Saturday against the Florida Panthers. The improved production has helped the Canes make a modest bump in their offensive numbers -- they're 28th on the power play but have moved to 27th in goals scored per game (2.43). "Some of it's confidence, I guess," Canes coach Paul Maurice said today. "But I thought even in the month prior, our chances per power power ratio was very high, and it was lot of things. The puck wasn't going in the net for guys."

Brandon Dubinsky's goal at 1:21 of the third period proved to be the winner Monday night as the Rangers took a 3-1 victory over the Canes. Marc Staal added an empty-netter in the final minute to finish off the Rangers' thrid straight road victory as goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was stellar, closing with 32 saves. Lundqvist had 15 stops in the third period. Marian Gaborik had a goal and assist, as did Dubinsky, for the Rangers (17-16-3), who are recovering from a 1-6-2 stretch that dropped their record below .500. The Canes (9-21-6) had won three straight at the RBC Center.

The reporter from Montreal admitted he wasn't quite sure how to properly phrase his question in English today to Canes coach Paul Maurice. The gist of it: was this season a "write-off" at this point? "No, no, we don't feel that way," Maurice said. "That will never be a decision that we make. "We've got a fair number of our kids up anyway. ... We're playing as hard as we can to win, we're playing (hard) every night and we've been playing pretty darn well for a month. We certainly don't have an awful lot to show for it, but absolutely not."
